A graded piano exam measures a set programme of playing against a published syllabus and returns a mark out of a fixed total. Learners in the UAE meet three boards: ABRSM, Trinity College London and RSL Awards. Each runs its own grade ladder from a starter level up to Grade 8, and each sets its own components.

What a graded piano exam measures
A graded piano exam is a fixed programme of playing, assessed once against a published syllabus. The board decides what the candidate brings: pieces from its lists, technical work, and supporting tests such as sight-reading, aural or improvisation. Marks go to each part and add up to one total, and each board sets its own total and its own bands. ABRSM marks a Practical Grade out of 150 and sets a Pass at 100, a Merit at 120 and a Distinction at 130. It adds that a pass in each component is not required to pass overall, so strong pieces can carry a shaky sight-reading test.

How each piano exam is put together
Practical Grades
Three pieces, one from each of Lists A, B and C, carry 90 of the 150 marks. Scales and arpeggios carry 21, sight-reading 21 and aural tests 18. Scales are played from memory, in even notes and without pedalling, and the sight-reading passage is seen for half a minute.

Performance Grades
Four pieces in one continuous performance, at least one from each of Lists A, B and C. The fourth may come from the lists or be the candidate's own choice, their own composition included. Each piece carries 30 marks and the performance as a whole carries 30.

Two digital pathways
The Technical work pathway sets three pieces at 22 marks each, technical work worth 14 played as one unit, and 20 for the performance as a whole. The Repertoire-only pathway sets four pieces at 25 marks each and drops technical work. Both run as one continuous recording.

Three kinds of certificate
A Grade Exam sets three pieces at 20 marks each, technical exercises worth 15, a supporting task worth 10 that the 2025 specification gives as sight reading or improvisation, an ear test worth 10, and musicianship questions worth 5. A Graded Certificate covers pieces and exercises, taken remotely. A Performance Certificate sets five pieces.

Sitting a piano grade from the UAE
Each board publishes what a UAE candidate can enter, and the digital route is the one currently listed for piano. ABRSM lists local exam contacts for the UAE and offers digital Performance Grades, online Music Theory at Grades 1 to 5, and digital diplomas on demand. Its 2026 UAE listing for face-to-face Practical Grades shows one session, October to November Session one, marked Session cancelled. Trinity states that the UAE is currently offering digital exams only, covering Classical Music, Rock & Pop, Drama and Communication Skills, while theory papers are sat in person. RSL lists Piano, Classical Piano, Keyboard and Music Theory among its UAE qualifications, in person or digitally by recorded and live stream video. Entries go to the board itself, and RSL words the higher-grade supporting task differently on its piano page and in its 2025 specification, so it is worth checking first.
Deciding whether the graded path is the right one
- A published syllabus turns a loose ambition into a defined set of pieces, technical work and tests
- An examiner outside the lesson gives an independent mark and a written report
- Grades build a record that travels between teachers and countries, and ABRSM and Trinity continue past Grade 8 into diplomas
- An entry date gives practice a shape, and ABRSM lets a candidate start at any grade
- A syllabus holds the repertoire steady for months, which a learner drawn to film music or their own writing may find confining
- Scales, sight-reading, aural tests and musicianship questions carry real marks, so preparation reaches past the pieces
- Entry follows the board's calendar, and a session can be changed or cancelled, as ABRSM's 2026 UAE listing shows
- A certificate records one performance on one day, and a learner can reach a high standard with none
