IELTS is the International English Language Testing System, a four-skill English test jointly owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. Listening and Speaking are identical in the two tests, and Reading and Writing differ. IELTS advises checking the requirement of your country, institution or association before booking.
Forty questions across four parts, ten in each, in about 30 minutes. Parts 1 and 2 sit in everyday social situations, parts 3 and 4 in educational ones, and each recording plays once.
Forty more questions, with no extra time to transfer answers. Academic passages come from books, journals and newspapers written for a non-specialist reader, while General Training uses notices, advertisements and work-related texts.
Academic Task 1 describes a graph, table, chart or diagram in your own words, in at least 150 words. General Training Task 1 asks for a letter covering three bullet points.
Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the Writing score and asks for at least 250 words in about 40 minutes, answering the prompt printed on the paper.
Part 1 runs four to five minutes on familiar topics, Part 2 hands you a task card with one minute to prepare and about two minutes to talk, and Part 3 opens the topic out.
Writing is scored on task achievement or task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy, weighted equally. Speaking swaps the first for fluency and coherence and adds pronunciation.
Academic, General Training and IELTS for UKVI sessions listed in the Emirates run on computer, and the Speaking test falls on the same day or within seven days of the rest. Results arrive as a Test Report Form.

Nowadays, technology is very important for everyone in many ways.
Question: Which words here give an examiner anything to mark?
Answer: The words technology and important carry the meaning, and the rest would fit any essay on any topic. Naming the technology, the people it serves and the effect it has turns the idea into evidence for lexical resource.
Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1 towards the Writing score.

Why it happens
Task 1 asks for at least 150 words and Task 2 for at least 250. A candidate watching the clock stops once the argument feels finished, and IELTS says a short answer may show too little for the higher bands.

The tutor times drafts from the first lesson, so you learn what 250 words feels like, then works on carrying more meaning inside the same count.
Why it happens
A memorised essay is faster to produce, and the prompt on the day seldom matches it. Penalties apply to answers unrelated to the topic, and task response is a marked criterion.

The tutor spends the opening minutes of a writing lesson on the instruction alone, marking what the prompt asks before any plan reaches the page.
Why it happens
Not given means the passage itself does not say, and candidates answer from what they already know about the subject. The same habit turns Yes, No and Not given into a coin toss.

The tutor asks you to point at the line that proves each answer, so an answer with no line behind it gets rewritten as Not given.

The General Training Reading page warns that marks go for incorrect spelling and grammar, and the computer test leaves a short review window with no transfer time.

Why it happens
One minute of preparation and about two minutes of talk feel very different under an examiner's eye, and a candidate who collects ideas with no shape often stops after forty seconds.

The tutor rehearses task cards with a fixed note pattern, so that minute produces a structure you can talk along, in place of a loose list.
The overall band is the average of the four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band, so one weak skill pulls the whole result with it. Early lessons take a timed sample of each skill.
Writing and Speaking are scored on four equally weighted criteria, and each writing task is assessed on its own. Your work comes back scored against those criteria, with the missing evidence pointed out.
Listening, Reading and Writing run as one sitting of about two hours and forty minutes with no breaks, and Speaking lasts eleven to fourteen minutes. Full rehearsals expose stamina problems a short exercise hides.

A writing lesson with a marked task needs more room than a Speaking drill, and the length is chosen per lesson. The longest sessions suit timed rehearsals, the shortest suit steady weekly work.
A lesson can be taken alone or shared by a small group of up to six, which suits two friends holding the same test date. The tutor stays live with the group throughout.
Every local tutor on Educrest holds a valid UAE private teacher permit, issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, which introduced it with the Ministry of Education on 18 December 2023. At-home IELTS lessons open in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, for school students.
Requirements belong to the body receiving your score, and each date says when the source was read.
Academic is the test for degree-level study and for professional registration. General Training is the one for migration and for training or study below degree level. Listening and Speaking are identical in both, while Reading and Writing differ. IELTS advises checking your institution's requirement first.
Each skill receives its own band, reported in whole and half bands, and the overall band is their average rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
One Skill Retake lets you sit one of the four skills again within 60 days of a full computer-delivered test, at a centre that offers it. Acceptance varies: Express Entry in Canada refuses it, and the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council wants all four skills in one sitting.
The IELTS partners recommend two years as a maximum, and every receiving body then sets its own rule. The UK Home Office wants a test awarded in the two years before the application, and Australia allows three years for most English levels, twelve months for functional English (read 19 September 2026).
The British Council and IDP deliver IELTS in the UAE. IDP lists test venues in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Sharjah including Khorfakkan, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Dibba (read 19 September 2026). For a UK visa the venue has to appear on the GOV.UK approved list.
The IELTS partners announced on 5 March 2026 that from mid-2026 IELTS is no longer offered as a paper-based test, with exact timelines varying by market. A Writing on Paper option runs in selected markets, where the tasks appear on screen and you write your answers by hand.
UK Visas and Immigration accepts IELTS for UKVI and IELTS for UKVI Life Skills, sat in person at an approved centre. Since 8 January 2026 the Skilled Worker route asks for B2, which IELTS states as 5.5 in each component (GOV.UK and ielts.org, read 19 September 2026).
IDP states that IELTS and One Skill Retake are not recommended for anyone under 16 years of age, and in the UAE a candidate under 18 needs a signed parental consent form. Booking also calls for a valid passport or a UAE national identity card.
That depends on the gap between where your four skills sit today and the band your university, regulator or visa route asks for, so the first lessons are diagnostic. No tutor can promise you a band, and you may book the test again whenever you feel ready.
