At home, a school-age learner works with a UAE resident who holds the Private Teacher Work Permit issued by MoHRE. The emirate runs from an island city to mainland suburbs and out to Al Ain and Al Dhafra, and that shape decides how a lesson reaches a learner.
Abu Dhabi city sits on an island, with Al Reem, Al Maryah, Saadiyat and Yas close by, while Khalifa City, Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Al Shamkha sit out on the mainland. A lesson at the table works when the week stays inside one area, and a lesson on a screen works when it spreads across the emirate.
Private schools across the emirate follow different curricula, so two children living a few doors apart can be entered for different exams in the same subject. One sits Cambridge IGCSE, another works through an American curriculum school, a third through an Indian one. So a tutor's first question here is which board the school enters the learner for.
The Ministry of Education calendar covers public and private schools alike, and schools with Indian, Bangladeshi or Pakistani curricula sit outside it (UAE Ministry of Education, 23 February 2026). A family with children in two schools holds two calendars at once, and a lesson plan is written against the school's own one.
ADEK inspects schools through Irtiqa'a every two years, against six standards on a six-point scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, with Good the minimum expected standard for UAE schools (ADEK, 1 October 2025). Where a report points at one subject, lessons can start there.
The emirate has three regions: Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra. Online lessons reach all of them today, live with a tutor who teaches that subject, so a learner in Al Jimi, Hili or Zakher works with the same specialist as a learner on Saadiyat Island.
Lessons for adults and university students in Abu Dhabi run online, around a job or a degree. An adult registers for themselves, and one person can register on behalf of another, which is how a spouse or a colleague often starts. The goal sets the plan: an IELTS band, a CFA level, a dissertation chapter.
The emirate's learners sit in several groups at once: school students across several curricula, university students, adults building a qualification, and people learning a language, an instrument or a piece of software.
Educrest teaches Cambridge International from Primary to A Level, Cambridge IGCSE and AS Level included, and Pearson Edexcel from iPrimary and iLowerSecondary up to International GCSE and International AS Level. The British curriculum is widely taught in the emirate's private schools, and lessons follow the board the school actually enters the learner for, because two schools that both call a course British can sit different papers.
The Emirate of Abu Dhabi had 220 private schools and 233 nurseries across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra in October 2025.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation issues the Private Teacher Work Permit. MoHRE and the Ministry of Education launched it on 18 December 2023, and an application goes through MoHRE’s app, website or digital channels.
MoHRE grants the permit free of charge for two years. Documents from other issuers, among them a medical fitness certificate and a certificate of good conduct, still come on those issuers’ own terms.
As MoHRE’s launch release and the press summaries of it describe, one permit covers a lesson given to one student or to a group, in person or online. A tutor who lives outside the UAE teaches online.
The code of conduct approved by the Ministry of Education keeps information about students and parents confidential, and it bars a school teacher from tutoring students enrolled at the school where they work.
ADEK’s Professional Code of Ethics for private and charter schools lists obtaining the MoHRE permit as professional conduct for a teacher who tutors outside school hours, and prohibits tutoring students enrolled at the same school that employs the teacher.
